Nursing education leaders are finding themselves unequipped with the knowledge, skills and stamina to lead faculty and students through the unchartered waters of the post-pandemic academic landscape. Through a systematic review of literature, it is clear that the pandemic further exaggerated ineffective or outdated educational practices, while revealing the need for leaders to possess a new range of skills and competencies to navigate the changing tide of academia. This session will provide attendees with a range of next-generation leadership skills needed to navigate the changing tide of nursing education. Together, we will explore a new paradigm of leadership that can be used to re-envision nursing education while inspiring and supporting faculty to thrive in uncertain and changing times.
After surviving the ravages of the pandemic, nursing education leaders are facing an academic and clinical landscape that has been dramatically and permanently changed. Even before the pandemic, nurse leaders were grappling with the persistent nationwide nursing faculty shortage. Now, they must be prepared with the skills necessary to recruit, support and encourage new faculty while supporting the faculty who bravely weathered the storm of the pandemic and who are now weary given the emotional and physical toll it’s taken to support students over the last three years. The unprecedented nature of the pandemic has revealed a growing body of evidence that can be used to inform future nursing leadership practice. This presentation will highlight a new range of leadership skills, as identified through a systemic, literature review process, needed by contemporary nurse leaders to navigate the changing tides of nursing education and create an environment where all members of the nursing education team can thrive!
