200 - What Are We Teaching For? The Dichotomy Between Preparing Students for NCLEX and Clinical Practice Reality

Nursing academe is no stranger to evidence-based assessment, as we prepare students to take the NCLEX-RN examination. Standardized testing protects the public by demonstrating whether the candidate has a foundational level of specialized ability to enter practice safely. However, evidence shows a tremendous and widening gap between education and practice-readiness. Employers report satisfaction with the abilities of only 25% of newly licensed nurses. Academe must bridge this gap. Public health and safety depend on nursing educators discerning evidence and facilitating sound methods of preparation. This session explores educational strategies and means that assure learning salience, testing capability, and practice-readiness.

Objectives:

  1. Upon completion, participants will be able to describe "the gap" that exists between preparing students for licensure and practice.
  2. Upon completion, participants will be able to discuss ways in which "the gap" affects the general health of the public.
  3. Upon completion, participants will be able to articulate the nurse educator's role in bridging "the gap".
  4. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify three tangible strategies to prepare undergraduate nursing students for NCLEX passage and clinical practice reality.
