Professor & Simulation Specialist

Tammy Schwaab is a full professor and simulation specialist for the nursing program at Carroll Community College in Westminster, MD. Using clinical simulation since 2010, she designs, implements, and evaluates all on-campus clinical experiences for Carroll’s nursing students, as well as overseeing all aspects of the Simulation program.
Her clinical background includes bedside nursing within the medical surgical, pediatric, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care specialties. She spent many years working as a clinical hospital educator before moving to academia in 2010.
Her training background in simulation includes the Maryland Faculty Academy for Simulation Training (MFAST) 1.0 & 2.0 with Pam Jeffries at Johns Hopkins University, the Maryland Clinical Simulation Resource Consortium (MCSRC) simulation education leader train the trainer program levels 1-3 and is a 2018 alum of the NLN Simulation Leader program. She has been specially trained in use of the Debriefing for Meaningful Learning method. Her doctoral project targeted use of clinical simulation to improve the confidence and competence of medical surgical new graduate nurses when caring for deteriorating patients.
She serves the simulation community in a variety of ways. She is the current President for the Maryland Community & College Simulation User Network (MCCSUN), an International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) Simulation Education Program (ISEP) facilitator, a steering committee member for MCSRC, and an active member of the Simulation Committee for the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing (OADN).
She feels passionate about using clinical simulation and deep questioning to assist students to develop and practice clinical reasoning and judgement.
Outside of work she likes to spend her free time with her family traveling and birding.
