602 - Turning the Tide with a Collaborative Curriculum Redesign

The National Council’s implementation of Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) and the Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM) encouraged an entire curriculum redesign. This presentation shares our collaborative journey to increase clinical judgment earlier in a program while fostering successes every step of the way. Our team utilized the opportunity of a test plan change to turn the tide on traditional curricular approaches by infusing a variety of teaching and learning strategies. Attendees will be able to take away strategies to increase information processing with microlearning, role modeling, best practices, coaching and socialization techniques.

Why does nursing education need to turn the tide? Nursing Education has been addressing an ongoing call to action for over a decade. While some of the educational interventions implemented have worked well, the National Council revealed research that more is needed. Utilizing research and non-nursing educational assessment approaches the Next Generation NCLEX and Clinical Judgment Measurement Model was created. Institutions of learning like ours quickly realized that with the test plan changes pending we must also redirect our approaches. Curricular change takes time and lots of collaboration. Redesign of a curriculum as an overall intervention starts with learning, continues with innovative thoughts, incorporates many smaller initiatives, and ends with engaged learners that report their successes. Our team’s consist of content, consulting, and research. We collaborate with a wide variety of supportive teams from learning science to technology. The tide will not turn without sharing each other's innovative strategies.
